Reader Discipline
Sometimes called Awareness training or Deduction training, this Skill Discipline represents the keening of senses and intuition. Those who invest in these skills are usually those who find the need to determine details about others such as bounty hunters, inquisitors and spies. They can be viewed as intrusive and suspicious -- with good reason! After all, what business is it for theirs to know so much about you?
But for all their protestation, one adage will forever remain true: knowledge is power. This means knowledge of your comrades, your leaders and, especially newcomers and strangers. Therefore, despite the dangers of those who value their privacy and those who are immensely skilled with violence, Readers will always be of utility and of use to the world. Naturally, they need to find themselves adequate protection for those who would take umbrage with their inquiries -- or else find a more subtle way to pry secrets from their targets.

Supreme Observation (1/P): Gain personal details about someone from a short distance away
BASIC SKILLS
COLD READING
(Basic, Active-Conc/Focus, Inquiry)
With this Skill, you are able to study a target and determine what ails them with a surprising swiftness.
Using Cold Reader follows the steps below:
Perform at least 5-counts of Concentration (aka Conc-5) while within a step and arm’s reach of your target
Expend 1 Focus
Ask them one of the questions below to gauge their health. Put a hand atop your head to reflect that this question is out of game and preface it with “Inquiry” to represent your ability to deduce the answers based on your astute observations.
Cold Reading Questions
Afflictions Inquiry- What Diseases (or Curses) are affecting you?
Control Inquiry- What three, if any, Control effects are affecting you?
Fatalities Inquiry- How many Grave-Scars do you have?
Health Inquiry- Are you Healthy, Bloodied, Downed, or Critical?
This is an Inquiry effect and may be negated by Masked Mind and similar effects. Furthermore, your Heal effects upon your patient are increased by one point for the next 10 minutes - this is not cumulative with itself.
Diagnosis: If you have the Treat Injury skill, Cold Reading allows you to waive the Concentration for them and use those Skills as a Step effect to your examination. If your target is Critical or Downed, this also allows you to imbue the Painful Revive effect from First Aid instead.
Use on Spirits: You can use this skill to speak to a Spirit within a step-and-an-arm’s reach for the next 30 seconds.
Use on Self: You may use this on yourself, although you need not vocalize the questions or answer.
DEFENSIVE READING
(Basic; Active-Focus/Parley, Defense)
You gain use of the Dodge defense, which represents your ability to read the attacks of others and move your body away in response. Furthermore, you may augment your Dodge defense with your insight.
Dodge: This cannot be performed while wearing armor without a specific Augment. Invoke “Dodge!” and expend 1 Focus to negate all melee and ranged attacks that hit you within the last second. The following conditions prevent you from invoking the Dodge defense
You are wearing any Armor
Your character’s legs are impaired in-game such as through Mangle, Snare, Grapple or similar effects.
Any of the attacks come from behind you and hit your back torso (aka Ambush attacks)
Any of the attacks are Master-type attacks
Insightful Dodge: Against an individual that received one of your Inquiry effects this Period or one that you have studied with 30-counts of quiet Concentration this Period, you may use your insight of them to your advantage. You may choose to Augment your Dodge and invoke it as “Insightful Dodge”. For the next 10 seconds, you may invoke “Negate” against the next attack you receive from them.
MENTAL DEDUCTION
(Basic; Active-Parley/Focus, Inquiry)
You can discern certain details about someone based on how they talk, what they say, and how they act. Immediately after at least 30 seconds of Parley* (see below), you may use this skill to learn certain details about the person you were talking to.
To use this skill, you must do the following:
Parley for at least 30 seconds with a target within a step and arm’s reach of you
Expend 1 Focus
Invoke one of the questions below or from the Cold Reader skill. Hold a hand or weapon over your head to designate that you are asking out of game.
If your target is unfamiliar with this skill, clarify to them that they must truthfully answer “Yes”, “No”, “I don’t know”, or use a Deception-type skill.
Once you use this on someone, you may not use it again on them until the next Period or next Hour (whichever comes last). Uses on the Self are not subject to this limitation.
Mental Deduction Questions
Attunement Inquiry- Are you under the effects of [specific Attunement]?
Faction Inquiry- are you aligned with [specific ArchFaction or subfaction]?
Identity Inquiry- Are you [specific individual’s name]? (this may not work with certain Entities)
Stigmata Inquiry- Are you a [specific Stigmata]?
Use on Players: This Skill’s targets are vaguely aware of its use and may react with hostility or violence. Using this on another Player may count as a minor PVP action.
Use on Self (QConc-30): You may use this on yourself, although you need not vocalize the questions or answer. Replace the Parley requirement with 30-counts of quiet Concentration (aka QConc-30).
Use on Items (QConc-30): Additionally, this Spell also has another function: it allows you to determine if an item within arm’s reach and a step of you has a secret effect (Yes or No answer via Game Marshall).
*Parley: a term that means a close-range conversation with the target, within step and arm’s reach. They must have verbally recognized your presence and there must be no combat occurring nearby or else this Parley attempt is interrupted.
COMPLEX SKILLS
CORPSE READER
(Complex; Active-Focus/Conc, Inquiry)
Requires: Any two Basic Reader skills
You are able to study a corpse and deduce things about it. Because of its inert nature, you are able to learn more from it than you would from a living, reactive target.
To use this skill, you must perform at least 30-counts of Concentration while examining a Human corpse at least an arm’s reach and a step from you. Afterward, expend 1 Focus and invoke “Corpse Reader” to be able to ascertain details about it as though it were alive. This is an Inquiry effect.
You may ask up to three questions of the person playing the corpse or a Game Marshall (if there is no physical representation for the corpse). These questions must be from the list provided by the Mental Deduction skill or Cold Reading skill -- you must have either Skill to access their list.
Furthermore, you may ask the Corpse (or Game Marshall) for the last thing that inflicted damage upon it and they must answer truthfully (e.g. “a claw”, “a bullet”, “radiation”, “acid”, etc). You may be provided a location of this last wound, but it is not within the requirements of this Skill to do so.
Once this skill is used on a specific Corpse, you may not use it on the same Corpse until at least an Hour has passed.
DEEP READER
(Complex; Inquiry-Aug, Parley)
Requires: Any two Basic Reader skills
In addition to a growing proficiency in reading other people through observation and hypothesis, you also learn how to read people with a greater capability, asking more questions and learning more about different aspects of your target.
Deep Inquiry: You may augment and invoke “Inquiry” as “Deep Inquiry”. As a Step effect, ask a second question from the same list as the first, when using Cold Reading or Mental Deduction.
Combat Inquiry: Using Inquiry on another Character counts as Studying or Targeting them, for the purposes of the Know thy Enemy, the Defensive Reading, Sharpshooter Aspect (Dead-eye), and the Battle Aspect (Kensai) Skills.
Discern Creature: Furthermore, you may invoke “Inquiry, what are you?” and point at a creature within weapon reach of you (or an arm’s reach plus a step). If they are a player character, they may either invoke their name or simply “Human”. If they are an NPC or a monstrous being, they may respond with the type of monster that they are or the specific name of the creature type that they are playing. Doing this does not cost any Focus to use, but it may be used a maximum of once every hour.
KNOW THY ENEMY
(Complex; Active-Concentration, Attack-Aug, Ambush-Melee)
Requires: Any two basic Reader skills
You may designate a single creature, studying them for weakness before striking out at them for a significant amount of damage.
To do so, perform a quiet Conc-15 upon a single creature while maintaining Line of Sight with them. Afterward, you have a single use of a special attack with a small/medium melee weapon of Advanced-quality or better --this is usable within the next 10 minutes after a successful study.
This melee attack inflicts “3 damage” or a “Hobble” against your target, but it must fulfill the following requirements:
It must strike them from behind
It must hit their rear torso (or whatever their rear torso is)
you must preface it with “Assassinate” (e.g. “Assassinate, 3 damage”).
This special “Assassinate” attack may not be increased in damage and you may only have a maximum of one use of Assassinate available to you at a time. However, it does not cost Focus to use. Also, Skills, Spells or Items may change the type of damage that you are inflicting.
If a creature has no rear torso or a back area, you may hit its “torso” or the nearest analogue to it. A creature with no such body part is immune to this attack.
QUICK STUDY
(Complex; Active-Focus/Concentration, Inquiry)
Requires: Any two Basic Reader skills
Training and experience have allowed you to make a quick study of your targets and your opponents, discerning cues and clues for a better understanding of their next moves.
Quickened Studying: Whenever you have to perform a Concentration count to study an opponent (e.g. the Defensive Reading skill or the Know thy Enemy skill), you may augment it with “Quickened” and expend all of your Resolve (at least 1) to reduce that Concentration requirement to only 5 counts.
Quickened Targeting: Whenever you perform a Targeting count, you may augment it with “Quickened” and expend all of your Resolve (at least 1) to reduce the Targeting count to 2 counts.
ERUDITE SKILLS
INSIGHTFUL ASPECT
(Erudite; Active-Attunement, Aspect)
Requires: Any two Basic Reader skills and any two Complex Reader skills
You may enter into a mental state of calmness and meditation that enhances your ability to see through the deceptions of others. To even prepare yourself for this, you must dedicate a considerable amount of mental and emotional energy into your being – this requires:
To do this, label one of your empty Attunements with Insightful Aspect. Afterwards, activate said Attunement by participating in at least 10 minutes of quiet or prayerful meditation at a place of calmness or peace. You may not be Attuned to more than one Aspect and this Attunement lasts until the end of the Month.
After you have completed these requirements above, you gain the following effects below.
Snap Shot (1 Focus): you may invoke “Snap Shot” to instantly perform a Basic Ranged attack with a weapon you are wielding.
Improved Inquiry: When you are subject to an Inquiry effect from an adjacent person, you are able to use an applicable Inquiry skill upon them, augmenting it and prefixing it with “Insightful”. This can be a reaction to their Inquiry or a Step effect to your Inquiry defense.
Improved Senses: When you use the Keen Perception or Pursue Quarry skill and it is after Sunrise but before Sunset or you are holding a light source in your hand, you may augment and prefix it with “Insightful” to waive the Focus cost.
Lookout: You may use the Guard and the Intervene defenses to protect your allies from attack.
Opened Senses: Your maximum HP may not exceed 7 points.
MIND READER
(Erudite; Active-Focus, Parley, Inquiry)
Requires: Any two Basic Reader skills and any two Complex Reader skills
You are able to pick facts out from thin air as though you could read your target’s mind.
With this skill, augment your Mental Deduction skill (augmenting and invoking it as “Invasive Inquiry”) to instead ask them one of the following questions below (answered to the best of their out-of-game knowledge). Unlike the Mental Deduction skill, these questions are not in the “yes or no” format.
You must have personally and significantly experienced the specific attribute, trait or condition that you are asking about (i.e., you cannot look for something you have no knowledge of).
Mind Reader Questions
Afflictions Inquiry- What three, if any, Diseases do you have? (You may instead ask for Curses)
Attunements Inquiry- What three, if any, Attunements are currently affecting you?
Bonds Inquiry- Who are three people, if any, you are Bound to? (e.g Blood-Bound, etc)
Items Inquiry- What three, if any, Advanced or Superior Items do you possess on your person?
Stigmata Inquiry- What two Stigmata, if any, do you have?
PRECISE ASSASSIN
(Erudite; Active-Focus, Ambush-Melee)
Requires: Any two complex Reader skills and any two basic Reader skills
When you perform an Assassinate attack, you may expend 1 Focus to vastly increase its power. When you do this, you must invoke it as “Focused Assassinate” instead but you have a choice of several options:
Control You inflict your choice of “Blind Wound”, “Snare Wound”, or a “Silence Wound”.
Damage: You may choose to inflict damage instead with this attack. This inflicts 3 damage, plus any bonuses to Smite or Assassinate attacks -- this may not exceed 7 points of damage. The weapon used must be of Advanced-quality or better to use this skill.
RUTHLESS ASSASSIN
(Erudite; Melee-Aug)
Requires: Any two complex Reader skills and any two basic Reader skills
Your skill at striking at weakness is such that you are able to strike a second time to ensure your target’s demise. When you use the Assassinate attack with a small or medium melee weapon of Superior-quality, you gain the following advantage below:
You may perform a second Assassinate attack against them or another creature within approximately 10 feet of them within the next 10 seconds. This is a Step effect. Invoke the second attack as “Ruthless Assassinate” before invoking its damage or effect.
Step effect - Control: If the first attack is a Control effect via Precise Assassin, you may inflict the same Control effect on a different target using this Step effect.
Step effect - Damage: If the first Assassinate inflicts damage instead, the special attack from this Skill inflicts the same amount of damage.
Step effect - Death: you may choose to invoke “Instant Death Blow!”if you bring your target down. This inflicts one point of damage. This need not hit their back.
SUPREME OBSERVATION
(Erudite; Active-Periodic/Concentration, Inquiry, LOS)
Requires: Any two Basic Reader skills and any two Complex Reader skills
Once per Period, after quiet Conc-30 while maintaining Line of Sight with an individual, you may use the “Cold Reading” or “Mental Deduction” skill in a way so that your observations are harder to detect.
This skill allows you to request a present Game-Marshall or a Bonded Player Character to hand your target an index card (out-of-game) with a question from the Cold Reading or Mental Deduction skill. You are not able to augment the outgoing Deduction or use any non-Inquiry effect that requires you to be nearby.
The Target is still aware that the Skill is being used on them. But they are unable to determine who or what is “judging” or “observing” them -- this also prevents them from using skills like Mind Games or Death Masque to hurt you.
If they are unable to defend against it in any way, they must write down “Y”, “N” or “IDK” truthfully on the note, fold it and hand it back to your messenger so that the answer is unseen – this action is performed out of game, although your messenger may be in the area or conversing with your target for their own reasons.
It is up to you and your messenger to collude so that the note and its answer makes its way to you within the hour. That said, if there is no one available to assist you with this task, you are not able to use this Skill at that moment.
MENTAL DEDUCTION
(Basic; Active-Focus, Parley, Inquiry)
Requires: Counselor or Ranger Class
You can discern certain details about someone based on how they talk, what they say, and how they act. Thn. Immediately after at least 60 seconds of Parley*, you may use this skill to learn certain details about the person you were talking to.
To use this skill, you must do the following:
Perform a Parley for 60 seconds with your target
Your target must be within a step and arm’s reach of you
Expend 1 Focus
Invoke one of the questions below, prefaced with “Deduction” -- hold a hand or weapon over your head to designate that you are asking out of game.
If your target is unfamiliar with the skill, clarify to them that they must answer “Yes”, “No”, “I don’t know”, or use a Masking skill. They must respond truthfully and to the best of their out-of-game knowledge.
Once you use this on another character, you may not use any Inquiry-type skill again on the same character until an hour has passed. Uses of Mental Deduction upon yourself have no such limitations.
That said, the targets of this Skill are aware that they are being studied intensely and may react accordingly, often with hostility and sometimes violence.
· Deduction! Are you under the effects of [specific Body or Mind effect]?
· Deduction! Are you under the effects of [specific Blight]?
· Deduction! Are you under the effects of [specific Disease]?
· Deduction! Are you under the effects of [specific Curse]?
· Deduction! Are you a [specific Stigmata]?
Use on Self: You may also use this skill to find out things about yourself that you would not have known out of game, such as whether you are diseased or cursed, although only if you are sufficiently familiar with said disease or curse. You replace the Parley requirement with 30-counts of quiet Concentration.
*Parley: a term that means an engaged and close-range conversation with the target. They must also have acknowledged your individual presence with greetings or responses and you were at least within arm’s reach plus a step. There may be no combat or attacks occurring nearby.
COLD READING
(Basic, Active-Aug)
Requires: Mental Deduction skill
With this Skill, you are able to augment Mental Deduction to ask deeper questions of a target, learning about their background and allegiances through mere observation of non-verbal cues and other clues. Against someone unskilled or unprotected by any Masking defenses, this is especially potent.
You may use Mental Deduction to ask the questions below:
· Deduction! Are you aligned with [specific Faction or Sub-Faction]?
· Deduction! Are you [specific individual’s name]? (this name need not be their true name, so long as the inquirer knows of and has interacted with named individual – this may not work with certain magical/mutated creatures]
· Deduction! Are you under the effects of [specific Attunement]?
· Deduction! Are you [Healthy (full or near full HP), Bloodied (half HP or lower)?]
Lastly, this Skill also has another function: it allows you to determine if an item within arm’s reach and a step of you is magical or has a magical effect (Yes or No answer only).
DEFENSIVE READING
(Basic; Active-Concentration/Parley, Defense, LOS)
Requires: Mental Deduction skill
After at least 60 seconds of Parley, you gain the use of the Dodge defense (see Warrior Class) as though you had it. Invoked as “Artful Dodge” and costing 1 Focus, this defense is already augmented so that it can be used while wearing Armor (but not Heavy or Ultra-heavy Armor). However, it may only be used to defend against the person you conversed with – they remain thusly marked by this Skill until the beginning of the next Period or until you choose a different target.
In lieu of conversation, you may use this skill by Concentrating for 30 counts while observing your target (or a different individual if you want to change targets), done within line of sight from within 30 feet. This long distance study is not as reliable as a close up conversation since the advantage it bestows disappears after 10 minutes or if you lose line of sight of said target for 30 seconds or more. Line of sight in this case simply means that there are no large physical obstacles to your vision to the target (e.g. walls, screens, wide trees, etc), not necessarily that you are not looking at your target intently.
COMPLEX SKILLS
CORPSE READER
(Complex; Active-Focus/Concentration, Inquiry)
Requires: Any two Basic Reader or Hunter skills
After 30-counts of Concentration while examining a Human corpse while remaining within an arm’s reach and a step, you may invoke “Corpse Reader” to be able to ascertain details about it as though it were alive, working similarly to the Mental Deduction skill. This Concentration count replaces the 60 second Parley requirement for Mental Deduction and similar skills.
You may ask the person playing the corpse or a Game Marshall (if there is no physical representation for the corpse) up to three questions from the list provided by the Mental Deduction and Cold Reading skills.
Furthermore, you may ask the Corpse for the last thing that inflicted damage upon it and they must answer truthfully (e.g. “a claw”, “a bullet”, “radiation”, “acid”, etc), even if it is not a “yes or no” question. The person playing the corpse or the Game Marshall may provide a location of this last wound, but it is not necessary or within the requirements of this Skill to do so.
You may invoke “Deduction” as “Deep Deduction”. Doing this also requires 60 seconds of Parley as normal, but you may ask two questions from the list provided by the Mental Deduction skill or the Cold Reading skill.
GREATER DEDUCTION
(Complex; Inquiry-Aug, Conversation)
Requires: Any two Basic Reader skills
You may augment your Deduction skill so that it bypasses those who would normally have the training to stop it. Invoke it as “Greater Deduction”. The Skill functions as normal beyond the fact that it bypasses the simplest of Deception-type skills.
Furthermore, you may invoke “Deduction, what are you?” and point at a creature within weapon reach of you (or an arm’s reach plus a step). If they are a player character, they may either invoke their name or simply “Human”. If they are an NPC or a monstrous being, they may respond with type of monster that they are or the specific name of the creature type that they are playing. Doing this does not cost any Focus to use, but it may be used a maximum of once every hour.
ERUDITE SKILLS
EXCEPTIONAL INSIGHT
(Erudite; Aug-Inquiry)
Requires: Any two Basic Reader skills and any two Complex Reader skills
With this skill, you may augment the Mental Deduction skill, invoking it as “Exceptional Deduction”.
You may ask one “yes or no” question upon someone who is Bonded to you and within an arm’s reach and a step of you. They must answer truthfully and in either “Yes”, “No” or “I don’t know”. If your question is vague, unclear or otherwise needs clarification, that question remains unanswered – therefore you must ask clear and concise questions and you must use terms or names that are familiar to your target.
· At least 10 minutes of solitary meditation, prayer or music in a quiet place in the middle of the wilderness, beside placid water or an equally calm area – this meditation may not be for any other Skill. Take note that if you are going into a potentially hostile environment, you should hire or request bodyguards from your allies.
· One of your Attunement slots, labeled with this Skill. Take note that you may have only one type of “Aspect” effect affecting your person at any time.
After you have completed these requirements above, you gain the following effects until your “personal calm” is damaged by being dropped to 0 HP (or by an event you deem to have done so). To regain these benefits during the same month, you only need to benefit from a Rest:
Improved Inquiry: Whenever you use an Inquiry effect from the Reader Discipline, it is always a Greater Deduction effect without needing to Augment it.
Improved Senses: Whenever you use an Inquiry effect from the Hunter Discipline, it is always a Greater Perception effect without needing to Augment it.
Lookout: You may use the Guard and the Intervene defenses to protect your allies from attack.
Insightful Cunning: You are considered to be wearing and using an Advanced-Herb Kit for the purposes of your Shadower and Runner skills.
Opened Senses: Because this Aspect gifts you with powerful observational skills, you are unable to use the Resist Warp or Resist Terror skills.
MIND READER
(Erudite; Active-Focus, Parley, Inquiry)
Requires: Any two Basic Reader skills and any two Complex Reader skills
You may augment your Mental Deduction skill (augmenting and invoking it as “Invasive Deduction”) to instead ask them one of the following questions below (answered to the best of their out-of-game knowledge). Unlike the Mental Deduction skill, these questions are not in the “yes or no” format.
You must have personally and significantly experienced the specific attribute, trait or condition that you are asking about (i.e., you cannot look for something you have no knowledge of).
· Invasive Deduction! What Faction, if any, do you come from?
· Invasive Deduction! What three Stigmata or Augments, if any, do you have?
· Invasive Deduction! What three, if any, Body or Mind effects are currently affecting you?
· Invasive Deduction! What three, if any, Diseases do you have? (You may instead ask for Curses)
· Invasive Deduction! What three, if any, Attunements are currently affecting you?
· Invasive Deduction! What three, if any, Advanced or Superior Items do you possess on your person?
· Invasive Deduction! Who are up to three people, if any, you are Blood-Bound to? (Or Oath-Bound, Or Liege-Bound)
SUPERIOR DEDUCTION
(Erudite; Inquiry-Aug, Parley, Inquiry)
Requires: Any two Basic Reader skills and any two Complex Reader skills
After at least 60 seconds of Parley with an individual, you may use your Deduction skill (augmenting and invoking it as “Superior Deduction”) to bypass the Masking and Greater Masking skills and similar effects. This does not have the ability to bypass the Superior Masking skill (or an effect of similar gravity). Take note that this does inadvertently reveal the high skill of an individual who is able to deny your inquiries.
SUPREME OBSERVATION
(Erudite; Active-Periodic/Concentration, Inquiry, LOS)
Requires: Any two Basic Reader skills and any two Complex Reader skills
Once per Period, after 30-counts of quiet Concentration while maintaining Line of Sight with an individual, you may use the “Deduction” skill in a way so that your observations are harder to detect. You may request a present Game-Marshall or an allied Player Character to hand your target a note (out-of-game) with your question (one of the questions in the Deduction skill). Until the note makes its way back to your person, you must maintain line of sight to your target and cannot be using a Stealth skill. This means that this is best accomplished in a busy room. Line of sight in this case simply means that there are no large physical obstacles to your vision to the target (e.g. walls, screens, wide trees, etc), not necessarily that you are looking at your target intently. If something does come between you and your target, you have 60 seconds to regain Line of Sight.
If they are unable to defend against it in any way, they must right down “Y”, “N” or “IDK” truthfully on the note, fold it and hand it back to your messenger so that the answer is unseen – this action is performed out of game, although your messenger may be in the area or conversing with your target for their own reasons. It is up to you and your messenger to collude so that the note and its answer makes its way to you within the hour.
Note: Using Supreme Observation is not an augment of the Deduction skill. Therefore, you may Augment the outgoing Deduction, if you are able to do so. The Target is still aware that the Skill is being used on them. But they are unable to determine who or what is “judging” or “observing” them.
